A facial might seem like an extravagance, but actually has health benefits. Often thought of as a beauty service, facials do far more than enhance skin aesthetics.  Whether you live here in Lake Mary, in Orlando, or elsewhere in central Florida, you know the sun can damage your skin. And a facial can be a powerful weapon against the effects of the sun as well as aging.  The second most popular spa service after massages, facials are essential for an on-going program of skin care.

What is a Spa Facial?

[frame src=”http://hlcwellness.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/slide3.jpg” width=”300″ height=”IMAGE_HEIGHT” lightbox=”on” title=”93″ align=”left” ]A spa facial is a service performed by a licensed, experienced esthetician in a professional environment. This skin and mind pampering has many benefits.

Aside from the beauty aspects, a facial requires a series of precise stages or steps in order to realize maximum results.

“Facial treatments help to improve and restore circulation to facial skin layers, increasing the flow of oxygen-enriched blood to skin cells.” Livestrong.com

The first step in getting a facial is a consultation with an esthetician. Determining your needs along with your skin’s current condition is imperative. The consultation will help your esthetician decide what are the most appropriate treatments and which to avoid.

The consultation is usually followed by a cleansing. After your skin is fully cleansed, the esthetician carefully examines your skin under a powerful magnifying lamp. Steam generally follows the skin examination. Exfoliation is next; along with extractions, if necessary. Effleurage, or light rubbing, is done after exfoliation or extractions and a facial mask is then applied.

How can a Spa Facial Benefit Me?

Melissa Morgan, our esthetician can personally explain the many benefits of having a facial. It’s helpful to think of this service as a necessity for your skin, just as working out in a gym does for your body. Your skin is the largest organ of your body and needs to be treated regularly to stay healthy. Here are just a few of those benefits:

  • Better circulation. Your skin looks its best when circulation occurs unfettered. It keeps your skin looking more smooth and prevents drying. It also makes skin naturally glow.
  • Age prevention. A facial is one of the most powerful weapons you can use to keep your skin supple and prevent or reduce wrinkles.
  • Emotional benefits. Having a facial helps you to relax and unwind. And when you relax, stress falls away.
